How do I keep living in joy when the world feels like it’s burning?

Karla Ruiz –

We open the news and see war, poverty, violence, and suffering. Real pain. Real people. Real lives are changing overnight.

And then here we are, sitting in the comfort of our homes. Drinking coffee. Walking the dog. Planning dinner.

It feels surreal, even unfair. How can I talk about joy, love, or personal growth when the world is hurting? How can I speak about awareness, kindness, or being careful with our word when so many people are facing unimaginable pain?

There are moments when the suffering of the world feels so heavy that even the idea of joy seems misplaced.

There are many things happening in the world that I cannot control. I cannot control the decisions made by governments or systems of power, nor the actions of other people, yet I am not powerless because I can choose how I participate in the world.

Sometimes, the most immediate action I can take is to put my phone down and look at the eyes of my loved ones instead of drowning myself in more darkness. It’s about centering myself in the present, noticing what I have right now, feeling my emotions, and using that energy to take action. It’s offering this moment of presence instead of another moment of panic.

These actions may seem small, but they matter because we are not competing to see who does the most. When we do these small actions, we can go to bed at night knowing we showed up with sincerity and awareness, and that’s what matters.

Over the years, Toltec teachings have reminded me that the world we experience is shaped by the agreements we live by, the words we speak, the stories we believe, and where we place our attention: in fear or truth.

Truth is seeing beyond the stories, seeing things as they are and not as we wish they were. The truth is, I am here, and I am alive. There is no better place for me than to share what I do best, and if I go into the spiral of guilt and shame, then I do the world a disservice. Because we all know we need more joy instead of fear.

In this sense, we can see joy as nourishment instead of denial. A tired heart cannot help anyone, and a mind drowning in fear spreads more fear.

When we care for our heart, our body, and our mind, we create the energy needed to show up for others with presence. It is not about pretending everything is fine, but about refusing to let the darkness define how we live.

Sometimes the most radical thing we can do in a burning world is keep our humanity alive. To keep speaking with care, to choose love where we can, and to keep returning to awareness when the mind wants to drown in stories.

So instead of panic, I choose to create and share my love and joy, because the world needs more people who can stay awake in their hearts. We need space to breathe and to notice where our attention has gone. When we notice what is real, we connect with our body, our heart, and the people in front of us.

Perhaps, with this connection, we can start feeling a little bit of that peace that we are longing for, because peace is not something the world gives us once everything is fixed, but something we practice while the world is still full of noise.

Even if the world is on fire, we need places of joy to breathe and find inspiration. This place begins with us.

The world may burn for a time, but our joy and our breath remind us we are still alive.

During a recent Awaken Your Spirit session, someone asked a question that really stayed with me: “How do we change something we see as an absolute truth?” Not a surface-level question, one of those deep ones that makes the room go quiet. Because when something feels like truth, we don’t question it. We build our…

Let’s use our imagination and ask ourselves the question, not with judgment but with love and curiosity. Connecting with our senses, with wide, open eyes and soft hands. If your body were honored as a temple… how would you care for her daily? Would you wake each morning and bow to her breath? Would you…
