You’re Already Creating

Karla Ruiz –

When we think about creating our lives, it’s easy to imagine that creation begins with a decision. We picture a new career, a new relationship, a move across the country, or some bold leap that changes everything. We tend to believe that life is shaped by the big moments, the ones that are easy to spot when we look back.

But what if creation isn’t something we begin?

What if we’ve been creating all along?

Every day, we interpret what happens through our beliefs, our memories, and the agreements we’ve made about ourselves and the world. Those interpretations shape how we experience life, and they’re how we give meaning to our experiences.

Two people can live through the same event and walk away with completely different stories. One person doesn’t get invited to a gathering and thinks, They don’t want me there. Another assumes plans changed or the invitation simply got lost. The event is the same, but the experience is completely different. What changes is the meaning each person creates.

This is one of the reasons I love Toltec wisdom. It reminds us that our experience of life is shaped less by what happens and more by the agreements we’ve accepted as true. Many of those agreements were made long before we were old enough to question them. We inherited them from our families, our culture, our experiences, and even from moments we barely remember. Over time, they become so familiar that they feel like reality itself.

Awareness doesn’t ask us to fight those stories or replace them with positive ones. It simply invites us to notice them. The moment we recognize that a story is only one interpretation, something opens. We discover that we are no longer completely identified with it. There is space between what happened and the meaning we’ve assigned to it.

So many of us spend years waiting for life to change before we allow ourselves to feel different. We wait for certainty before we trust ourselves, for success before we feel worthy, or for someone else’s approval before we believe we’re ready. Yet every one of those moments is already shaping the way we experience our lives. Whether we notice it or not, we are always participating in the dream we’re living.

The question, then, isn’t whether you’re creating your life.

You already are.

The question is whether you’re aware of it.

And perhaps that’s enough to begin seeing your life with fresh eyes. The world may not have changed, but the way you experience it has, because you paused long enough to notice the story you were telling.

Every moment becomes an invitation to notice. Every interaction becomes an opportunity to question an old agreement. Awareness doesn’t change the past, but it can completely change the way we meet the present.

Maybe that’s what it means to live as an artist. Not someone who paints on a canvas, but someone who recognizes that the masterpiece has always been the life they’re already living.
